DOT Inspections for Tanker Trailers FAQS
Do I need a DOT number in MN?
In Minnesota, a DOT number is required if you operate a commercial vehicle that falls under any of the following stipulations. If your vehicle meets any of these conditions, it will need a USDOT number:
- The vehicle or vehicle combination has a gross vehicle weight exceeding 10,000 lbs.
- The vehicle, regardless of size, must display placards for hazardous materials.
- The vehicle is designed to carry more than 8 individuals, including the driver, for hire or compensation.
- The vehicle is used to transport more than 15 individuals, including the driver, not for hire or compensation.
Any semi-truck operator working for an intrastate carrier driving a truck over 10,000 lbs must also have a USDOT number. Additionally, this number must be displayed on vehicles that operate solely within the state.
What is the purpose of FHWA?
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) manages the construction, maintenance, and upkeep of highways, tunnels, and bridges across the US. Additionally, the FHWA is responsible for conducting research on the highway system and supports state and local agencies in enhancing highway safety, functionality, and promoting engineering innovation.
Do trailers need license plates in Minnesota?
Minnesota mandates that all trailers operating on streets or highways must be registered and plated.
